Flu, Cold, and COVID Season

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Flu, cold, and now COVID season is approaching. There are guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that can assist parents/guardians in making the decision to keep a sick student home.

If a student has any of the following symptoms, they should remain home. They need rest to recover, and they can expose classmates and school staff to an infection.

Fever, including a fever with a new rash. If your student has a fever of 101 degrees or higher, they must stay home.
Vomiting more than twice in the last 24 hours.
Diarrhea that causes accidents, is bloody, or your student has more than two episodes of diarrhea in the last 24 hours.
Skin sores that are draining fluid on an uncovered part of the body and cannot be covered with a bandage.
Cold or flu symptoms that are getting worse and that cannot be explained by other things such as seasonal allergies.
A student seems sick enough that they will not be able to participate in normal school activities, including learning. As parents/guardians, you know your students best.

Your student should not return to school until:

Student has been fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of Tylenol or ibuprofen.
A fever with a new rash has been evaluated by a healthcare provider and the fever has stopped.
Uncovered skin sores are crusting, and the child is under treatment from a healthcare provider.
Vomiting has resolved overnight and the student can eat or drink in the morning without vomiting.
Diarrhea has improved. The student is no longer having accidents or having frequent episodes of diarrhea (more than two episodes of diarrhea in a 24-hour period). Bloody diarrhea should be checked by a healthcare provider before your student returns to school.
Respiratory virus symptoms are getting better overall for at least 24 hours. Masks can be worn after returning to school as an additional action to prevent the spread of infection.

Most illnesses in students will resolve with rest, fluids, and Tylenol or ibuprofen for fever and/or discomfort.

In some cases, a student will need to be seen by a provider before they can return to school.

If the health aide suspects a fever with a rash might be contagious; for example chicken pox or measles.
If the health aide suspects a fever with a sore throat might be contagious; for example strep throat.
If the health aide suspects draining skin sores could be contagious; for example impetigo.
If the health aide suspects red, irritated, goopy eyes might be contagious; for example conjunctivitis (pink eye).

Your healthcare provider will provide guidance on when your student may return to school and they can provide a return-to-school note for your student.

Our goal is to provide a safe and healthy school environment for your student. Students do and will get sick. Our primary goal is to give your student the best care we can, including a recommendation that they be sent home to rest and recover. We also have a responsibility to minimize the risk of spreading an infection to other students.
